Teaching

I am a professor in the Capilano University Jazz Studies Department. I teach arranging, improvisation, and conducting. I also coach a variety of small ensembles and direct Narwhal, a mixed vocal/instrumental ensemble dedicated to new music. I served as Academic Coordinator (dept. head) from 2013-2018. Capilano is a great place to teach and work. We offer a B.Mus in Jazz Studies and attract some of Canada's most talented young musicians. The faculty are among the finest players and educators in the country.

Before coming to Cap full time I also taught elementary school band, at Delta Community Music School, Douglas College Department of Performing Arts, Stanford Jazz Workshop, and Simon Fraser University Faculty of Education and  School for Contemporary Arts.

Recently, I have had the privilege of doing some volunteer teaching and development work with the Nunya Music Academy in Dzodze, Ghana. My friend Kofi Gbolonyo and his brother, Prosper are doing incredible work with the children there. Go to www.nunyaacademy.com to learn more.
